NHS Tayside’s first Dermatology Community Locality Centre for Image Capture (CLIC) has been created in the outpatient department at Arbroath Infirmary where patients can have high quality clinical images of their skin taken locally and sent securely to the dermatology team at Ninewells Hospital.

This will allow the team to assess new referrals as efficiently and accurately as possible and help reduce clinic waiting times. It will also reduce the need for patients to travel for appointments by offering access to the clinical photography service closer to their local area.

Following the initial pilot project in Arbroath, the team hopes to expand the service to other areas across Tayside.

Lead dermatologist for the CLIC service Dr Alyson Bryden said, “We are delighted to celebrate the opening of the first CLIC at Arbroath Infirmary and are excited about the impact the CLICs could have on improving patient care.

“I would like to thank the many people in various departments across NHS Tayside who helped to make the CLIC service a reality.”

The CLIC programme has been established thanks to a collaboration between NHS Tayside’s dermatology, clinical photography and innovation teams, who worked together to create an innovative app for taking and sending images through NHS Tayside’s purpose-built medical image management (MIM) system. Introduced in the clinical photography service in 2018, the MIM allows real time, immediate access to medical photographs through a secure database.

The teams also worked with the University of Dundee’s department of computing and Health Informatics Centre, AI skin cancer consortium and British Association of Dermatology.
